IK Start in the period 1935 -1944
Here is an overview of what happened to the club from 1935 to 1944, with possible links to more information.
Football was on the rise in the mid-1930s. It culminated with the Norwegian “Bronze Team” (the national team that beat Germany during the Olympics in Berlin), where no player from Southern Norway or IK Start was included.
In 1935, Start became the only club from Southern Norway to be admitted to the Norwegian Bandy Association.
The Norwegian League in football was introduced in 1937. It was organized into eight districts, each with one or two groups, and six or seven teams in each group. The district winners played in playoffs, while the bottom teams were relegated to local leagues. The season ran autumn/spring. The league did not include Sogn og Fjordane or Northern Norway, which played local leagues.
1939 was also the year when Start was admitted as a member of the Norwegian Ski Association and had many dedicated skiers.
Start had a big idea about fostering community. Therefore, the club bought a former shop in Skreros, did some volunteer work on it, and opened it as “Starterhytta” (“the Start Cabin”), located close to inviting ski terrain and with the railway as a means of transport to Oggevatn.
For Start was not just a football club — skiing, athletics, cycling, and orienteering were also on the program.
In 1939, Start achieved 11 wins, seven draws, and two losses, which must be considered respectable. During the autumn season of the Norwegian League in 1939, the club came in second place, just one point behind Donn. The spring season naturally disappeared.
The outbreak of war meant that the football season started late in 1940, but matches were still played. In August and September, the Vest-Agder Football Association organized the “City Championship” for the clubs in Kristiansand and the surrounding area.
Then came the extraordinary annual meeting in the spring of 1941, which voted 66 to three that the club would not participate in sports competitions going forward. See more here.

Finn Hansen was re-elected in 1941, before most sporting activities came to a halt due to the war.
