Ernst Kurt Hatlestad – A True Club Enthusiast at IK Start
Ernst Kurt Hatlestad (born October 29, 1921 – died May 28, 2008) was one of IK Start’s most loyal clubmen over several decades.
Ernst came from Stavanger and transferred from Viking to IK Start in 1945, the same year he joined the club. As a player, he recorded 59 official matches for the yellow and black before ending his playing career in 1955.
But it was first and foremost as a volunteer, leader, and dedicated club figure that Ernst truly left his mark in Start's history. He was a tireless volunteer and always stepped up where needed. Among other roles, he served on Start’s selection committee during the 1950s and 60s, was a long-time member of the youth committee, and played an important role in the clubhouse committee for many years. He also helped launch the popular “Open House” events in the Starthallen, which fostered community and activity at the club even outside match days. In addition, he was a faithful and active member of Start’s senior council for many years.
Ernst’s story is also marked by remarkable service during World War II. In 1940, he signed on as a deckhand in the merchant navy. While en route to France, he learned that Norway had been occupied. He eventually made his way to the United States and joined Little Norway, later serving in England in the military police and the renowned 332 Squadron at North Weald. Ernst survived several dangerous Atlantic crossings, facing both submarine attacks and depth charges.
After the war, Ernst began his professional career as an air traffic control assistant, first at Sola and later at Kjevik, where he worked until retiring in 1983 after 40 years with the Norwegian Civil Aviation Administration.
For his immense dedication to IK Start, Ernst received several honors over the years:
Club Plaque in 1980
Senior Council Trophy in 1983
Start’s Gold Pin in 1986
Ernst Kurt Hatlestad was a model of club spirit, loyalty, and volunteer dedication. To those who knew him, he will always be remembered as the cheerful and helpful "Hatle" – always with a smile, always ready to serve the club in his heart.
