Rolf Andresen (1921–2014) – A Key Figure in IK Start's History
Throughout its long history, IK Start has been fortunate to have many passionate contributors and vital supporters. Among them, Rolf Andresen stands in a class of his own – as a player, coach, leader, and visionary. Few have held as many roles within the club – and even fewer have left such a lasting legacy.
A Late but Impactful Debut
Rolf Andresen joined Start from Lyn (Oslo) and became a member of the club in 1953. That same year, at the age of 32, he made his debut for the first team. Known as a skilled and thoughtful player, he made a total of 118 appearances for Start. Coming from the Oslo football scene, he brought with him a clear sense of professionalism: improved training attendance, more serious match preparations – and notably, an attempt to ban smoking. These ideas were not necessarily popular at the time, but they demonstrated Andresen’s willingness to challenge old habits in the name of progress.
Coach, Team Leader – and Leader at Every Level
After ending his playing career, Rolf stepped in as the head coach for the first team and also served as team manager for a period. But his contributions didn’t stop there. Over the years, he held several key roles within the club, including chairman, vice-chairman, head of the facilities committee, and head of the legal committee – a testament to his broad and wholehearted commitment.
“The Father of Starthallen”
To many, Rolf Andresen will be best remembered as “the father of Starthallen.” When the idea of an indoor training facility began to take shape, Rolf led the way with energy and determination. He was a driving force in making the project a reality – a facility that has since proven invaluable to the club. Starthallen became a hub for training, a gathering place, and a symbol of the club’s forward-thinking ambitions.
Honours and Recognition
Rolf Andresen’s efforts were recognized both within and beyond the club. In 1975, he was awarded IK Start’s Gold Badge and in 1981, he was granted the club’s highest honor – honorary membership. When Start celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005, Rolf was awarded The King’s Medal of Merit – a powerful and well-deserved recognition for a lifetime of service to the club he loved.
A Lifelong Commitment
Rolf Andresen was more than just a valuable contributor – he was a culture bearer. A role model for younger generations and a steady force in shaping IK Start both on and off the pitch.
All of us at IK Start are proud and deeply grateful for everything Rolf Andresen has meant to our club. His legacy will never be forgotten.
