IK Start in the period 1965 -1974
Here is an overview of what happened to the club from 1935 to 1944, with possible links to more information.
In 1965, Per Borten became Prime Minister after the long “Gerhardsen era,” and Vålerenga were crowned league champions in football.
The United States formally attacked North Vietnam.
Start struggled to find the right position in the 2nd Division, even after being moved to 2nd Division Group B. They finished sixth in Group B twice, before being transferred to Group A. There they captured second place in the 1967 season, and finally achieved promotion from the Second to the First Division in 1968.
That year, Start managed to win 11 out of 14 matches, clinched the 2nd Division Group A title, and secured promotion to the 1st Division.
In the cup, they were knocked out in the 2nd round (1965), 4th round (1966), 3rd round (1967), and 3rd round (1968).
Start’s top scorers:
1965 – Ivar Karlsen – 11 goals – 14 league matches

1967 – Odd Frivold – 22 goals – 14 league matches
1968 – Odd Frivold – 12 goals – 14 league matches
It turned out to be only a taste of the 1st Division. In the 1969 season, Start finished 9th and were relegated back to the 2nd Division.
Trond Pedersen made his debut at the age of 17 during that relegation season.
In the 1969 cup campaign, Start reached the 4th round. Afterwards, they went out in the 3rd round in 1970, and in the 2nd round in both 1971 and 1972.
1969 – Sten Hellvik – 6 goals – 18 league matches (1st Division)
The 1970 season brought a 6th place finish, the year Svein Mathisen made his debut, followed by a 2nd place finish in 1971. Then the team once again showed their strength, and after the 1972 season they earned another promotion – this time followed by a well-deserved 3rd place in the 1st Division in 1973.
Top scorers:
1970 – Odd Frivold – 6 goals – 14 league matches (2nd Division)
1971 – Odd Frivold – 10 goals – 14 league matches

A new era was about to begin.
Before the 1973 season, there was a change in goal as Roy Amundsen made his debut between the posts.
Svein Otto Birkeland, formerly of Vigør, joined from Lyn midway through the 1973 season and was greeted with the famous message from Karsten Johannessen: “Half of you split into two, and the rest follow me.”
In the 1973 cup campaign, Start were knocked out in the 3rd round.
Top scorer:
1973 – Odd Frivold – 7 goals – 22 league matches (1st Division)

The 1974 season was somewhat of a disappointment, with a 7th place finish in the 1st Division. However, Start had qualified for the UEFA Cup thanks to their 3rd place the year before. They lost 1–2 against Swedish side Djurgården in the first leg, and the return match in Stockholm ended in a heavy 0–5 defeat.
In the 1974 Norwegian Cup, Start reached the quarterfinals but lost 1–2 at home to Viking.
Top scorer:
1974 – Helge Skuseth – 9 goals – 22 league matches

The junior team won the Norwegian Championship for the first time by defeating Brann 2–0 in the final at Kristiansand Stadium. The coach was Egil Kjell Drøsdal.

The chairman elected in 1965 was Erik Stallemo. He was followed by Frank Pedersen (1966, 1967, 1969, 1970), Magne Udø (1968), and Rolf Andresen (1971–1974).
On the administrative side, work had begun on building an indoor hall for the club. More on that in the next period. The club’s orienteering activities were discontinued in 1973, but later re-emerged as Kristiansand Orienteering Club.
Internationally:In 1974, Richard Nixon resigned as President of the United States following the “Watergate” scandal, and ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo.
